Completion of Asters in 2004 represents the renewal of over 200 years of service to the community at this very same location. First a humble farm, then a tea room and ultimately a restaurant. Named in tribute to its predecessor, the muchly celebrated Yellow Aster Restaurant, Asters will once again offer an experience that reflects the mood and old traditions of the Berkshires....welcoming smiles, courteous service, good food and an atmosphere that says 'relax'.
The original building, which encompasses the lounge, private dining room and stairway, was built as the Humphrey farm house in 1790. The Yellow Aster came into existence in the summer of 1927 when the home was transformed into a tea room by Katherine Smith and Hilma Dunlap, who operated a tea room across from Carnegie Hall in New York City. In 1930 they transformed the tea room into a full service restaurant. In 1945 the restaurant was sold to Angelo and Zenaida Cassani and then to Rudolf Schrader in 1953. In 1955 the Yellow Aster was purchased by Nicholas and Marian Makes who operated the restaurant successfully for the next 30 years. From 1985 to 1998, the property had numerous transformations and names, none of which quite captured the former popularity and success of the Yellow Aster. In August of 1998, William and Krista Stevens acquired the site and opened the South Mountain Grille; a casual, fine dining restaurant which was subsequently purchased in May of 2003 by Asters present owner, Joseph Toole. While the extensive 2004 renovation will provide the physical means by which a memorable dining experience is possible, it is only by our unrelenting committment to your satisfaction that such an experience will be assured. May you enjoy your experience now and for years to come! Joseph M. Toole, Owner |
